Ages 6 and Up
Duration: Under One Hour
This is a wonderful activity to share with your children, as plain Christmas ball ornaments become family treasures!
More on
WHAT YOU NEED
A package of clear or frosted glass Christmas ball ornaments
Acrylic paint in a color or colors of your choice
Plain water
Small paper cups
A small funnel
Glitter, gel marker or metallic paint pens
Narrow ribbon
HOW TO DO IT
For each color of paint, squeeze about 1 tbsp. acrylic paint into a paper cup.
Add 2 tsp. water and mix thoroughly.
Carefully take the top off the ornament. If you squeeze the wire loop, the top will come off easier.
Pour the paint mixture into the ball using the funnel.
Swirl the paint around until the ball is completely coated inside.
Pour the excess paint back into the cup. Repeat using up to
3 colors.
To give a marbled effect, use white as your second color choice.
Let the paint dry. This will take about 6 hours.
With your supervision, have your child write his or her name, age and the year on the outside of the ball using gel markers or metallic paint pens. You can do this for younger children.
Put the cap back on the ornament and tie a pretty ribbon on it.
FOLLOW-UP FUN
Buy a small table-top tree to display the ornaments and discuss how the tree will need to be larger each year as you add ornaments.
Take a picture of your child standing next to the tree each year (write the year it was taken on the picture) and watch the tree and your child grow, year after year.
