WHAT YOU NEED
1 Empty 10.9 oz. NESTLÉ NESQUIK canister (washed and dried)
2 pieces of different colored construction paper
Colored 3x5 inch index cards
Safety scissors
Non-toxic glue stick
Double stick tape
Cellophane tape
Self-adhesive tabs (available at office supply stores)
HOW TO DO IT
Clean and dry an empty NESTLÉ NESQUIK 10.9 oz. canister.
Trace the child's hand onto a sheet of colored construction paper and cut it out using safety scissors.
Trace that cut out onto another, different colored, sheet of construction paper and cut that out. Glue the hands together with a non-toxic glue stick.
Cut off 1 inch of a 3x5 inch index card so that it measures 3x4 inches. The 3 inch edges will become the top and bottom of the card.
With a non-toxic marker, write "Mom's Recipes" on the side of the card without lines, and decorate it however you'd like. Using double stick tape, attach it to the front of the NESQUIK canister.
Cut off 1 inch of another 3x5 inch card so that is measures 3x4 inches. Hold the card so that it's vertical and make a 1 inch fold in the card. It will now measure 3 inches x 3 inches (This creates a pocket to hold the recipe card.)
Tape the folded "recipe pocket" to the back of the canister with the fold facing in. 1 1/2 inches of the card should be seen above the opening.
Make sure that the tape covers up only about 1/2 inch of the bottom of the folded pocket so that there is a deep enough pocket to hold recipe cards.
Use double stick tape to adhere the paper hand to the top front of this card.
Choose a recipe you think Mom would like from our Cooking & Baking section, or from a magazine or cookbook.
Copy the recipe onto a colored 3x5 inch index card and slide your recipe card between the back of the box and the hand, so it looks like the hand is holding the recipe card.
Write the recipe sections you choose onto colorful adhesive tabs.
Apply each tab to the 3 inch end of an index card making sure they are spaced out for easy reading.
Place the tabbed cards into Mom's Recipe Box along with some blank cards behind each section.
FOLLOW UP FUN
Have family night in the kitchen. Plan the menu using one or two of "Mom's Recipes", then give each member of the family a special job. Little children can set the table and help with easy tasks, like stirring. Older children can prepare simple dishes by themselves. Mom and Dad can handle the recipes that require cooking or baking.
Encourage the kids to look for recipes to add to the recipe box all year. What a great way for them to be sure their favorites are included in the family meal plan.
