WHAT TO SAY
Mardi Gras (called Carnival in many countries) is celebrated around the world. It is held before the beginning of the season of Lent, the period leading up to Easter. The city of New Orleans, Louisiana, through its French heritage, hosts Mardi Gras in the USA. At Mardi Gras, throngs of partygoers enjoy celebrations including parades with colorful floats, elaborate masks and costumes.
MARDI GRAS MASK
WHAT YOU NEED
- 1 box of NESTLÉ SWEETARTS
- 1 box of WONKA Runts
- Fabric glue
- 1 small jar or tube of purple acrylic paint
- 2 small paint brushes
- Green shiny honeycomb lace (10.5 inches by 3.25 inches)
- Sequin strands, purple and green (25 inches each)
- Strand of pearl ribbon (11 inches)
- 1/4 inch dowel rod, 12 inches long
- Faux feathers (available at craft stores)
- Hot glue gun
- Green and purple ribbon (30 inches each)
- Green and purple craft jewels (available at craft stores)
- Safety scissors
HOW TO DO IT
- Select a mask that is purple in color. If not possible then spray paint it to the desired color.
- With a paint brush, coat the front of the mask with fabric glue, and lay the honeycomb lace across the front, let dry.
- Trim the lace from each eye hole.
- Along the top front edge of the mask hot glue a strand of green sequins. Along the bottom, glue a strand of magenta sequins.
- Glue the strand of pearls under the magenta sequin strand.
- Glue seven alternating purple and green SWEETARTS along the top edge of the mask. Glue green and purple jewels to the #162er of each SWEETARTS candy (purple jewels on the green SWEETARTS, and green jewels on the purple SWEETARTS).
- Glue green and purple feathers along the top of the mask.
- To make the mask's handle, paint a dowel rod with purple acrylic paint.
- Spiral a length of narrow green ribbon down the painted dowel, securing each end with a craft glue gun.
- Glue the end of the dowel that will be attached to the mask with 12 inch lengths of narrow purple ribbon and sequin strands.
- Secure the decorated handle to the back edge of the mask with a craft glue gun.

WHAT YOU NEED
- 1 WONKA NERDS Rope
- Green ribbon (20 inches)
- Craft glue gun
HOW TO DO IT
- Cut the ribbon into two pieces of equal length (10 inches each piece).
- Tie ribbons around each end the NERDS ROPE, leaving about 9 inches of ribbon.
- Measure the length of the necklace around your child's neck and tie the ribbons off into a bow to close the necklace.
TIPS
- Glue the decorated mask handle to the right back edge of the mask if your child is right-handed and the left back edge if your child is left-handed.
FOLLOW UP FUN
- Organize a neighborhood Mardi Gras Parade. Plan a day of mask and miniature float making and let the children march around the neighborhood showing off their fancy Mardi Gras creations!
