WHAT YOU NEED
1 1.6 oz. empty Mini Chewy SWEETARTS dispenser
Safety scissors
White card stock (1 piece)
Colored markers and/or crayons
Clear contact paper
Cellophane tape
6 inches of fishing line
HOW TO DO IT
Print rain gauge ruler
template
.
Color the ruler with colored markers or crayons.
Cut out the colored rain gauge ruler.
Cover both sides of ruler with clear contact paper, leaving enough around the edges to form a 1/8 inch border on all sides. This will protect it from the rain, and make it sturdy so that the ruler can stand straight.
Stand the ruler inside the SWEETARTS dispenser so that the ruler rests on the bottom of the container.
Tape the ruler at the top, wrapping it over the lip (from the inside to the outside of the container), so that the ruler is secure.
Place your rain gauge outside in an open area to catch the rain.
At the end of the day, have your child check the gauge to see how much rain has fallen. This is a great way for them to begin visualizing measurements such as inches and simple fractions.
TIPS
Secure the rain gauge to something so that it won't blow over if it is windy. For example: set the rain gauge on an outside fence ledge and tie to the fence with heavy string.
FOLLOW UP FUN
Help your child log the amount of rain that falls each day during your rainy season. Watch the weather reports to see if your rain gauge measurements are similar to the weatherman's.
