WHAT TO DO

  • Consider the kinds of books or subjects your child has liked in the past as well as the kinds of characters, situations and topics he or she might relate to or find interesting.

  • Ask friends, relatives and people you trust what books their children read.

  • Recall books you read as a child and consider whether they are appropriate for your child.

  • Ask your librarian to recommend books.

  • Look at books awarded Caldecott, Newberry, and Coretta Scott King commendations.

  • Vary your selection and try different subjects to hold your child's interest.

  • Make sure that the stories and illustrations present different issues in positive ways.

FOLLOW-UP FUN

  • Set time aside everyday for reading and discussing books.

  • Make box puppets depicting characters and act out the plot or story. This is a creative way to enhance your child's reading comprehension skills.

Visit the public library - there may be a storytime that fits your routine, there are certainly lots of books, there may be special events (visits by authors), and there may be books on display. This month, my library has set out folklore and fairy tale books on the display shelves.

I tutor children and adults free who are under a 2.5 average in reading. They may come to me after school or on week ends. I spent 30 years as a first grade teacher and 20 years as a sub teacher. I know the sequence of reading and I have one book for each level. I ditto off the books and pages if needed. I am a firm believer in being able to read at a strong second grade level so that my students may take off. I am familiar with 3 phonetic programs. I would like to give my students books.
