More on
WHAT YOU NEED
Heavy weight decorative craft paper or wallpaper samples (each sheet should be 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches or larger)
Safety scissors
Craft glue gun
Craft knife
1-hole punch
Decorative ribbon (1 -12 inch length for each handle)
Small beads (available at craft or hobby stores)
Several sheets of colored tissue paper (two sheets for each basket)
NESTLÉ TOLLHOUSE CANDY BARS or other candy treats.
HOW TO DO IT
Print out the cone-shaped May Day Basket
template
and trace onto a sheet of decorative paper or a piece of brightly patterned wallpaper.
PARENTS ONLY: Roll the paper into a cone shape and secure lengthwise with a craft glue gun. The opening should be about 3 inches in diameter.
Let the cone dry for several minutes.
Using a 1-hole punch, make a hole on each side of the cone about 1 inch from the top edge.
Insert each end of the 12 inch length of decorative ribbon through the punched holes from the inside of the cone to the outside.
Knot the ribbon so that it will not pull through the holes. This forms the handle for the basket.
You are now ready to decorate your basket. Here are some suggestions:
Make 1/4 inch horizontal slits, 1/2 inch from the top edge of the cone. Insert 1/4 inch ribbon through the slit nearest the back seam of the cone. Pull the ribbon through all of the slits from inside to outside, going over the top edge of the basket. This will make a ribbon edge. Finish this with a small bow.
Make vertical slits around the top edge of the cone and weave ribbon in and out to form a border.
PARENTS ONLY: Using a craft glue gun attach decorative beads.
Stuff each basket with brightly colored tissue paper.
Place candy treats like NESTLÉ TOLLHOUSE CANDY BARS inside the decorated baskets.
TIPS
Buy and save sheets of decorative paper and colorful ribbon during the year. This way, you will be one step ahead when it's time to make your May Baskets.

Check to see if there are any May Day festivals in your community. Your family might see the May Pole Dance where children dance and sing while weaving brightly colored streamers around a May Pole.
