WHAT YOU NEED

For the Indian Headdress
  • Heavy duty brown construction paper
  • Manila folder
  • Red, yellow, green felt
  • Fabric glue
  • Red and yellow feathers
  • Ruler
  • Safety scissors
  • NESTLÉ WONKA and SWEETARTS candies

HOW TO DO IT
  • Print out the templates. Template 1. Template 2. Template 3.
  • Measure the circumference of your child's head. Cut a strip of manila folder, an inch longer than that measurement by 2 inches wide.

  • Cut a piece of brown construction paper the same length as the manila folder strip. Glue these two strips together to make a sturdy band.

  • Cut out 6 triangles, 2 from each color of felt. Alternate the colors around the band and secure them with glue.

  • Overlap the band at the ends about an inch, and staple the ends together.

  • Use a craft glue gun to secure candy pieces to the outside of the band within the brown areas.

  • Cut two feather shapes using the template, one from yellow felt and one from the remaining manila folder. Glue these two pieces together.

  • Use a craft glue gun to secure the red and yellow feathers to the yellow felt side of the feather shape.

  • Staple the completed feather to the inside-back of the headdress.

WHAT YOU NEED

For the Indian Necklace
  • Suede lace (available at craft stores)
  • Blue and yellow feathers
  • Multicolored wooden and/or pony beads (available at craft stores)
  • Craft glue gun

HOW TO DO IT
  • Cut a piece of suede lace 2 feet long.

  • String about 17 wooden and pony beads to the lace, alternating sizes and colors.

  • Tie the necklace together at ends.

  • Attach the blue and yellow feathers to several of the beads using a craft glue gun.

WHAT YOU NEED

For the Native American Shirt
Your child will have fun learning Native American pictograph symbols and using the symbols of his choice on his Native American shirt.
  • Pictograph template
  • Large piece of brown felt
  • Red, yellow and green felt
  • Safety scissors
  • 1 - 3 x 3 x 3 inch gift box (1 for each pictograph stamp)
  • 1/4 inch thick twine (approximately 1 foot per stamp)
  • Craft glue gun
  • Fabric Paint

HOW TO DO IT
  • Cut at piece of brown felt to measure 18 inches wide by 44 inches long. Fold in half, so that the folded size is 18 inches wide by 22 inches long.

  • Cut a triangular hole in the center of the fold to create the neckline.

  • Use the template to cut 5 pieces of multicolored felt triangles and glue them to the neckline.

  • Cut slits, 1/8 inch wide by 4 inches long along the bottom of the costume.

  • Print out Pictograph template.

  • To make Pictograph Stamps, glue twine to the bottom of the boxes in the shapes of Indian Pictographs (symbols). Let dry.

  • Pour a generous amount of fabric paint onto paper plates. One color per plate.

  • Dip the Pictograph Stamp into the paint making sure that the twine is completely covered. Press the stamp onto the costume.

  • Repeat several times using different Pictograph symbols. Allow the paint to dry.

TIPS

  • They can trade candy treats just like the Native Americans traded for food with the small shells that they called Wampum.

FOLLOW UP FUN
  • Use the Pictograph stamps to create a Native American Pictographs Book.

  • Have them write a little story using the pictograph symbols in place of some of the words.
