My dad used to point out the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper when we were kids. I liked to do the same for my own children. Now I've got to learn how to find them!

Every year around the 11th of August there is an amazing meteorite shower in the Northern Hemisphere. One year they looked like they were coming through the clouds. That's one that always goes on our summer calendar.

I try to get to a local park to camp or a beach.Being mindful of turtle nests.Or find so farmland. Find a spot with the least light. Pull out binoculars or telescope if you have them and just look up. I have seen shooting stars or meteor showers with just my eyes and looking up at the sky at the beach or in the mountains.Awesome memories. Please make some for yourself.

When I was just a young child back in the 1950's it seem like on a lot of clear nights that you could almost reach up and pick the stars right out of the sky! With a telescope back then it really would have been very interesting and special too!

We have a long-barreled telescope on a tripod that we get out when we hear about unusual celestial viewing opportunities (planets close together, eclipse of the moon, etc). But sometimes we just take a tarp out in the backyard (away from the streetlights) and lay out and count shooting stars. A very peaceful excitement!
