  • Small paintbrushes

  • FLOUR a cutting board or other kitchen work surface.

  • ROLL out the cookie dough to about 1/8 inch thickness.

  • PRESS the cookie cutters into the dough and arrange the letters on an ungreased cookie sheet.

  • COOL completely on wire cooling rack.

Royal Icing Recipe:

Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons meringue powder(available at cook's stores)
  • 2 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons warm water

HOW TO MAKE IT

  • BEAT all ingredients in large bowl for 5 minutes or until icing forms stiff peaks.

  • DIVIDE frosting into several small bowls.

HOW TO DECORATE THEM

  • Add several drops of different colored food coloring to each of the separated bowls of icing.

  • Dilute the icing with drops of water until it is thin enough to spread evenly over the cookies.

  • After covering all of the baked cookies with the different colored icing, let them dry completely.

  • Set out tubes of ready-made frosting, the remaining royal icing and small paintbrushes.

  • Let each child pick out the letters of the alphabet that they would like to decorate.

  • When the decorating is done, place the decorated cookies on a wire cooling rack again until the icing dries.

  • This is a fun dessert for your children to take to the first day of school!

TIPS
  • Bake duplicate letters so that each child can decorate his or her name.

FOLLOW UP FUN
  • Your children can use the alphabet cookie cutters as templates and trace the alphabet onto paper. You can then suggest that they use the letters to personalize their schoolbook covers.
