WHAT YOU NEED
  • 1 21.8 oz. NESTLÉ NESQUIK canister
  • 1 craft knife
  • Shiny stones and decorative jewels (available at craft stores)
  • 1 bag of mortar mix (available at home improvements stores)
  • 1 large disposable mixer bowl
  • 1 large spoon

HOW TO DO IT
  • (PARENTS ONLY) Measure 2 inches from the bottom of the NESQUIK canister and using a craft knife, cut off the top portion, leaving the base as your mold.

  • Put 1 1/2 cups of mortar mix into a large mixing bowl. Add 1/2 cup of water and mix together. Add more water as needed to make a slightly watery paste.

  • Pour the mixture into the NESQUIK canister mold. The mix should fill the mold to about 1/4 inch from the top.

  • Let the mixture set for about 20 minutes. Place the jewels and stones on the surface of the mixture. Allow the objects to sink into the cement a little, so that they stick up just slightly over the surface.

  • Leave a space in the design so that your child can write his or her name and the date.

  • Allow the mix to set an additional 20 minutes. Then, give your child a pencil. Ask your child to write his or her name and the date, making sure to press firmly on the mortar to make a clear impression.

  • Let it set for an additional hour. The mortar mixture will warm up and then cool down when it is completely dry.

  • (PARENTS ONLY) Use a craft knife to make long slits in the NESQUIK mold to free the stone.

  • Let your child help you choose a special spot in the garden for his or her stone.

  • Dig a shallow hole deep enough so that the stone is at the same level as the garden area around it.

  • Set the stone in the hole and replace the garden soil around all of its edges.

TIPS
  • Go through your jewelry box to see if there are any bits of costume jewelry that can be imbedded in a family stepping-stone. Ask your child if he or she has any waterproof mementos to include.

FOLLOW UP FUN
  • Have everyone in the family make a stepping-stone to create a special pathway in the garden.
